The Dream Quilts
Feathers (detail)
Feathers (detail)

Collaboration

Stencilling, image transfer, embroidery, applique, fabric crayon, fabric pens, printing inks, feathers, original poetry by Linda on pieced quilt top, quilt batting, hand tied.

Birds and feathers figured strongly in dreams recalled by several of the project collaborators. As well as referencing the down that stuffed quilts of old, birds represent the ability to gracefully cross over from the dream world into waking reality. Certain squares of the quilt have been removed to reflect the ‘ruined house’ referred to in the text and to suggest the deconstruction of a dream.

Linda Hawke

Applique, reverse applique, hand embroidery, canvas, acrylic inks, on pieced quilt top, quilt batting, hand tied.

Although friendly enough, the dog is an imposing presence. It symbolizes the constants that ‘dog’ us in life the kinds of things we contemplate when we cannot sleep. The figures represent how we react to these obstacles in life’s various stages.

Waves (detail)
Waves (detail)

Collaboration

Hand embroidery and stencilling by Kathleen, text by Virginia Woolf, Muriel Rukeyser, the Sherman brothers, Werner Herzog, and Linda, selected and transferred by Linda on pieced quilt top, quilt batting, machine quilted.

While the text explores different perspectives on insomnia, embroidered and stencilled imagery presents a contrasting picture of childhood comfort.
