As most of us go on with our lives in this city, feeling rooted into our environment, our social groups, our family, our work and activities, there exists a group of artists that feel restless.
Their life is often in limbo. Limbo between two jobs, between two homes, between old and new friends. In this state of restlessness, they find freedom and the liberty to express themselves in the protective energy of the Drop In Centre Art Studio. There, surrounded by respect, kindness, encouragement and a little drama, they grow new roots with like minded people. Together, they are the Artists of the DI Art Studio.
Restless: In Rooted World is the playful reversal of our Festival theme and aptly challenges us to consider our own personal roots. Enjoy stunning visual artwork created by eight artists from the Art Studio located at the Calgary Drop-In Centre. Nicole Gagnon, Ruth Vickers, An Dong, Mandy McKinley, Ann Lee, Cindy Fredricks, Lorraine Thomson, Jake Volkers, Dave White, and A.P. Worth are making dedicated efforts to develop as artists despite their experiences of homelessness.
Painter, sculptor, and TMC artist-mentor Patricia Lortie has worked with this talented group since December to guide them in mounting this exhibition.
The Central Library art wall gives a taste of the expanded exhibit at Loft 112 in the East Village, a creative space where writers and artists come together.
