“The ideals of TMC coalesce in this event which transforms identical white hats into individual expressions of social comment, identity, and sense of place.”
Over the past years This is My City (TMC) has produced some wonderful works of art. Now you get a chance to buy them!
All the proceeds of the sale of these artworks support TMC programming with marginalized individuals and communities.
The exhibit showcases the original, wearable hats made by professional Calgary artists to wear during Stampede and beyond. It also features stunning handmade decorative quilts that reflect themes of sleep and dreams.
Tip Your Hat to Dreams! is a celebration of our Calgary home. We hope to see you there!
ABOUT THE EXHIBIT
Making a quilt is an exercise in balance. As the quilter's focus constantly shifts between small details and the vision for the final piece, the quilt itself takes shape.
In this collaborative project with the Women's Centre of Calgary, the big picture included voice, group dynamic, and expression of ideas.
In these quilts I see not only the individual stitches made with care, I see the grace and optimism with which the makers face adversity; I see people making time for art in their lives because it sustains them; I see women finding community in creative acts because creative people know the heart of them.
We should all be so fortunate.
Tip Your Hat
It all started in 2009 with Reg Knelson, back when he was a resident of the Calgary Drop-In Centre and one of the original This is My City (TMC) workshop participants.
His idea - to have artists create artworks out of cowboy hats that would be sold to the public - captured what TMC is all about.
Tip Your Hat invites diverse artists to make works of art that express unique stories and uses them to then engage a broad spectrum of people in dialogue.
As the hats are bought, worn, and displayed, they continue to tell their stories in even wider circles.
