This is My City Art Society (TMC) artists serve as mentors who bring their skills and love of art into shelters and service agencies and connect with individuals there to make music, theatre, and visual art together. We currently hold weekly visual art programs in a variety of media including printmaking, painting, drawing, and found object assemblage at the Calgary Drop-In and Rehab Centre. In addition, a photography workshop is underway at Alpha House and a mural project was recently completed at Alpha House’s transitional housing site The Lodging. The works in this display are a small sample of the many expressions of creativity produced in these settings.
Facilitating opportunities for positive, creative expression among those who know homelessness is just one part of TMC’s mission. A second and equally important objective is to exhibit the resulting artwork for the broader public to see. This work is at the Central Library, where thousands of people will see it daily, because we believe that art builds bridges. Through art, diverse people can see and celebrate shared values instead of focusing on differences.
